Rava Idli


Rava idli is one of my favourite South Indian breakfast.  It is very easy to make & taste great with grated carrot and green peas.  Healthy & wholesome meal for kids lunchbox too.  No need to ferment and the preparation time is just 20 mins.  Serve them hot with spicy tomato chutney or with your desired chutney.  


Ingredients :

  1. Rava /Semolina - 1 cup
  2. Buttermilk - 1 1/2 cup
  3. Grated carrot - 1/2 cup
  4. Green peas - 1/2 cup
  5. Coriander leaves 
  6. Oil - 3tbsp
  7. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  8. Channa dal - 1 tbsp
  9. Ural dal - 1 tsp
  10. Green chillies - 3 nos
  11. Ginger, grated - 1/2 tsp
  12. Curry leaves
  13. Onion, chopped - no
  14. Salt to taste
  15. A pinch of hing
  16. Eno Fruit salt / Baking soda - 1 tsp
Method :

1.   Heat oil in the pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal and channa dal.  Add finely chopped green chillies, curry leaves, ginger and chopped onion.  Saute for few mins.

2.   Add rava / semolina and roast them for few mins (without changing the color ).


3.   In a large bowl, add the roasted semolina, grated carrot, green peas, coriander leaves, salt to taste, Eno fruit salt and butter milk.  Mix together without any lumps.  The batter should be either very thick or runny.  Allow the batter to rest for 5 mins.

4.   Meanwhile, grease the idli pan with oil and pour the batter (sprinkle some coriander leaves on the top, if desired).   Steam the idli's  for 10 mins or until done.


Serve hot with chutney.
